WAIRARAPA'S WANTS
AN UNSYMPATHETIC MINISTER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Masterton, Last Night. The Hon. R. McKenzie, who was banquetted by the settlers of Pongaroa on Tuesday evening, arrived here this evening, after a day's drive over the route of the suggested Pongaroa-Masterton railway. A deputation waited upon the Minister to-night, and urged the deviation of the Rimutaka railway, and the construction of lines between Masterton and Waipukurau. Mr. McKenzie stated that the railway was already constructed over the Rimutaka, and he was of the opinion that a deviation was a matter for the consideration of the Minister for Railways. So far as a railway between Masterton and Waipukurau was concerned, he stated that the country was held in too larpe areas, and there was too little population to warrant proceeding with the railway at the present. The Minister leaves for Wellington to-morrow morning.
