PRISONER'S DASH FOR LIBERTY
JUMPS FROM A TRAIN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. A prisoner named Joseph Christie, 17 years of age, who was recently sentenced to a term of imprisonment by the Supreme Court in Dunedin for breaking and entering and theft, jumped from this afternoon's express when passing Woodlands. This prisoner and another, who is serving five years, were in charge of Principal Warder Kearney, who allowed Christie, at his request, to go to the lavatory, but instead of doing so the prisoner opened the door of the carriage and jumped out. It is stated that lie landed on his feet, and made off. No time was lost by the prison authorities, on being acquainted with the escape, in taking steps to effect recapture, and motorcars were employed to reach the scene without delay. Christie has escaped no less than four times from Bumhani Industrial School. So far no news of his capture has been received.
