A DESERTER DROWNED

A PATHETIC HAPPENING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. At Rawene, in the Hokianga harbor, two seamen made a determined attempt to desert from the Norwegian barque Lindstol when she was lying at anchor early this morning. One of the men, evidently a strong swimmer, arranged to tow the other ashore, and this somewhat risky task the two men set out upon. The second man could not keep himself afloat, however, and lie was drowned. The swimmer towed the dead body oi his comrade ashore, and reported what liad occurred.
