ILLEGAL USE OF INSTRUMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, April 10. The police received advice on Saturday that a man named Edward Reynolds lias been arrested at Rotoruu charged with having supplied an instrument for an unlawful purpose. In connection with (lie matter a woman named Annie Paterson lias been arrested here, charged with having used the instrument for an unlawful purpose. OPIUM SMOKING. Wellington, April 10 Yee Wong was fined £5 today for having smoked opium, and £lO for being in possession of opium suitable for smoking. WOMAN ASSAULTED. Blenheim, April 10. On Saturday evening an old woman named Julia Greeves, who lives alone at Grovctown, was brutally assaulted by a man who entered the cottage where the woman was in bed, and struck her in the face with his fist. Upon her screaming out it is alleged that lie attempted to strangle her. When help arrived the man had escaped. The police are ivestigating the matter, but so far there is no clue to the identity of the assailant. INJURED IN AN AFFRAY. Gisborne, April 10. James Blanch was seriously injured in an affray- on .Saturday night, and lies in the hospital in an unconscious condition. At the Magistrate's Court to-day James Easton was remanded until Wednesday on a charge of having assaulted Blanch. CHARGE OF THEFT. Masterton, April 10. A man named Charles Gurote was committed for trial at the Magistrate's Court this morning on a charge of the theft of 10 sacks of chaff, 1% sacks of oats, and 24 sacks, valued at~£4 9s (Id. Bail was allowed in his own recognisance of £SO and two sureties of £SO each.
