RASH SPECULATION
BANKRUPT'S METEORIC CAREER.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. A contractor named Thomas Brownlee, who was recently adjudged n bankrupt, was charged at the Police Court to-day with bringing about his bankruptcy by rash and hazardous speculation! It was stated that the accused had had a meteoric and disastrous career as n contractor. In twelve months lie had entered into eight contracts. From three of these he had made a profit" of £SB, but on the others he had lost over £IOOO. He had started with a capital of £'2s, and his liabilities were now between £IBOO and £2OOO. He had paid a dividend of 5s fid or .'is 9d in the .pound. It was urged that there was no criminal intent, but the Magistrate said that this did not absolve the accused from liability. A sentence of fourteen days' hard labor was imposed.
