500 DRAUGHTS FOR AUSTRALIA

SAILED ON TUESDAY. Some time on Monday evening a ape* cial train, containing at least 160 draught horses, arrived in Wellington from Manawatu (says the "Dominion), Tho horses were sent aboard tie Whangape, which sailed for Australia. on Tuesday. Most of the shipment will be heavy draughts, as the demand is the wheat-growing districts of the Commonwealth at the present time is chiefly for heavy sorts. It is understood that the shipment is being made as the result of purchasing operations which have been conducted in this island for some time by Messrs. Phillis Bros, (from Australia) and Mr. E. D. Browne, of Palmerston North. Roughly, the whole island (it is said) has been scoured for heavy horses, and, since January, 500 horses, ten .pedigree stallions and about 70 pedigree mares have been purchased. A couple of hundred out of the total were drawn from the Manawatu. Four hundred of the whole are draughts, and the others three-quarter and half-draughts. Twelve thousand five hundred pounds is set down as the value of the puchase. The pedigree stallions purchases, it ia reported, include Royal Crown, bought from Mr. Oughton (Okaiawa, Taranaki), Royal Black (from Hawera); Blythe Ben (from Te Puke); Bonny Doon and) three yearlings, from Mr. W. B. V. Pearce, of Ramgkratu. Besides Messrs Phillis Bros.' big lot, Messrs. Hoult and Sons, of Fcilding, are dispatching 154 heavy draught horses by the Whangape. Mr. J. D. Mitchell, the Taranaki breeder, is taking over a dozen heavy draughts of quality, and about forty are being sent up from the South Island. Fifty draught mares and geldings are being shipped on account of Messrs. Ward a»d,McGaffin, of Hawke's Bay, and Mr. "Anderson, of Pahiaitua, is consigning seven, comprised of stallions ; and mares;
