MASS MEETING

IST CONNECTION WITH THE W.C.T.U.

The Theatre Royal was well filled lost night at the moss meeting held after church in connection with W.C.T.U. convention. The Rev. J. 6. Chapman presided. The meeting opened with singing "The Old Hundredth." Three short but forceful addresses were delivered. Miss Powell, of Palmerston North, spoke on the aims and objects of the W.C.T.U., and particularly dwelt on its work in connection with its girls' homes, etc. She also pointed out that the so ciety was a world-wide one. Mrs. Don, of Dunedin, discoursed on the evils of the liquor traffic, which, she stated, stood in the same position to-day to wards mankind as the Amalekites of old did to the Israelites, and was a scourge and a trap. Mrs. Berymante address was also ou the no-license question, but more particularly as it affected a no-license district. Ashburton, where she had resided for the past year, she considered had been much maligned. It was really a fine place and a prosperous business centre. She admitted there, were some sly-grog shops in the district, but then, she added, other places had their sly-grog shops as well as their licensed houses —a double curse. During the evening, Mrs. Douglas made an appeal to the ladies present to join the local branch. <During an interval Mrs. Moodie rendered the solo "Don't stop praying." The singing of the Doxology concluded the meetin'g. Miss Douglas presided at the piano.
