FLOUR MILL DESTROYED. By Cable—Press. Association—Copyright. Received 15, 12.10 a.m. Sydney, Last Night. Davy's flour mill, recently fitted with up-to-date machinery, has been de stroyed by lire. The work of the firemen was greatly impeded by large bodies of dough falling from higher floors. SPREAD OF IRISH BLIGHT. Received 25, 1 a.m. Sydney, Last Night. Orange and Maitland districts are the latest additions to the Irish blight area. STATE COAL MINE. Received 25, 1 a.m. Sydney, Last Night. On the strength of legal opinion, the Minister for Mines believes it necessary to obtain Parliamentary sanction before being able to proceed further in the matter of establishing a State coal mine.
DAMAGES FOR LIBEL. Sydney, March 24. Mrs. Newell, wife of Andy Newcll, a prominent cricketer, who disappeared some time ago, was awarded £2OO damages against the Sun newspaper fo> having published an article purporting to be founded on a letter received by a friend from Newell in which it was stated that he went away for reasons of a domestic character. Defendants were granted a stay of proceedings. THE HAREM SKIRT. Melbourne, .March 24. Crowds in various parts'.of the city gave two ladies in harem skirts, with a male escort, an uncomplimentary reception. They were several times compelled to take refuge in a taxicab which accompanied them, or in shops. STRIKERS FINED. Sydney, March 24. The Industrial Court fined the men at Carcoar mines, who recently went on strike, £5, with half-a-guinea costs each, in default a.month's hard labor. FEAR OF PUBLICITY. Sydney, March 24. The Labor Council is enforcing a resolution not to allow any reporters at their meetings excepting members of the Writers' and Artists' Union, which is affiliated to the council. FLOUR MILL BURNED. Sydney, March 24. Fire destroyed Davy and Sons' flour mill at Pyrmont. The damage, which was £IO,OOO, is covered by insurance. UNEMPLOYED AT NEWCASTLE. Sydney, March 24. Owing to slackness of trade large numbers of miners in the Newcastle district are unemployed, and strong pressure is being brought upon the Government, to provide relief work.
