A MELBOURNE MYSTERY
MAN ACQUITTED OF MURDER. By Gable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 24. 10.10 p.m. March. 34. ' Fynch was acquitted on the charge of murdering Steane. Archibald Steane was found dead in Edinburgh Gardens, North Fitzroy, on New Year's Day. Percy Fynch was charged with the murder. He stated that he, with two girls, was crossing the Gardens, and deceased asked for a cigarette, and then attempted to assault one of the girls. A fight followed. Deceased produced a toy revolver, and he (Fynch) snatched it and hit deceased on the head. He fell, and witness ran away. Deceased was under the influence of drink. The girls corroborated the storv, but another witness declared that deceased was perfectly sober on the night of the tragedy; also that he was of a quiet temperament, and never smoked. A medical witness opined that death was the result of a kick on the head while deceased was prostrate.
