The new peer was born in 1850, educated at Edinburgh and Cambridge, where he gained his M.A. and L.L.D. degrees, studied law, and entered politics, where he soon distinguished himself, being appointed to his present position in 1005. MacKenzie had a right royal welcome from his constituents at the social they gave him in Mosgiel last week. In the course of his speech he said, "But whatever happened, he did not believe the wiping out of the electorate would wipe him out of Parliament, and if the Taieri sent were notaltered much they could take it from him that he would stick to the seat if the people would have liini." It is probable. Mr. MacKenzie will -be requisitioned' to stand for the Taranaki seat, in the event of his electorate being wiped out. The Hon. Wm. McFarlane, ControllerGeneral of Prisons, and Mr. Hay, Director of Forests, of New South Wales, arrived in Wellington from the north last night. Since they came to the Dominion they have inspected Mt.
