ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

CRUSHED TO DEATH. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Carterton, Friday. Word was received in Carterton this morning of the violent death of Hugh Mitchell. F. J. Reid, late of Martinborough, was driving a load of furniture to his property at Land's End, and Mitchell was sitting on the cart with him. While ascending a small hill by the Gladstone School the harness broke, and the jerk caused Mitchell to fall, the wheels passing over his chest. His ribs were crushed and his lungs pierced. The ambulance and a doctor were sununoned from Masterton, and the Carterton police were communicated with, but before medical aid arrived Mitchell passed away. He was between 45 and 50 years of age, and had been a great footballer, and as an athlete was very popular.

A WHARF ACCIDENT. Westport, Friday. A cargo boom got away aboard the Maponriica this morning and swung slowly amongst the crowd at the foot of the gangway on the wharf. Five or six people were knocked down. Percy Hambleton, of Greymouth, had his head and face cut, and bled profusely. Mrs. Devery was bruised on her side, and was in much pain. Others escaped unhurt. A MINER KILLED. Westport, Last Night. A miner named William Young was killed in the Westport Coal Company's Mangatina mine to-day. He was having crib, when a lump of eoal became detached from the roof and fell on him. killing him instantaneously.
