WIRELESS STATION
SEARCH FOR A SITE. Auckland, March 15. Mr. J. Orchiston, Chief Engineer of Telegraphs, accompanied by Mr. Moens, the Australian Wireless Telegraph. Company's engineer, and Mr. Brosnan, of the Public Works Department, have for the last five days been travelling throughout the Auckland district looking for a site for a high-power wireless station for the North Island. "After five days' continuous travelling in motor-cars, traps and trains," said Mr. Orchiston. "wu have not been able to discover any place around Auckland which will meet the requirements. The more likely places we have hit upon are not suitable for the establishment of the plant it is necessary to put down. We are now abandoning the quest as far as' Auckland is concerned, and are going straight on to Doubtless Bay, leaving this evening by steamer for Mbngonui, en route. We want a plateau of about ninety acres in extent, or an area of level land on the sea level will do as long as there are no obstructing hills, ana, I am now convinced that only afDoubtless Bay can we get the requisite site. The contractors have eighteen month* to carry out the work, and once the site is fixed upon it should not be long before the Government will start erecting the necessary buildings. We are to have one high-power station in the NoTtfc Island, and one in the South at the Bluff. As soon as we have settled upon the site for the northern station we will 'go to the Bluff to fix a site there, but we do not anticipate any trouble in getting a place in the South."
