Champion, swimming ai the Wuitemata Club's carnival held in the Albert Street baths to-night, broke the New Zealand record for 100 yards (03 l-ssec) held by C. Briee, of Thorndon, Wellington. He covered the distance in 61 4-ssec. The carnival was held for the purpose of raising funds to keep Champion's family while he is away Irom Auckland. Champion is de-' termined not to go to the Festival of | Empire sports unless the sum of £BO, is provided for his family's maintenance.! A special effort will be made to-morrow, to raise the balance required (about £4O). The carnival to-night will show a. profit of about £3 only.
