PROSECUTION OF BATCHERS. By Telegtaph.—Presa Association. Wellington, Last Night. C. Waldrige, Inspector of Awards, pro ceeded against several master butciiers in the Magistrate's Court to-day for breaches of the butchers' award. W. Woolland did not appear to answer a charge that he committed a breach oi the butchers' award in that he engaged a non-unionist when unionists wt.t availablc. His Worship said defendant was foolish not to come and make an explanation. A tine of £2 was inflicted. W. Collyer, butcher, of Kilbirnie, was charged with a similar breach of the same award. It was alleged that on 15th January defendant engaged a man named Thos. Brown when there were unionists available. Evidence to this effect was given. Mr. Anderson (solicitor) stated that the defendant had applied for a man, and one was sent out, but he proved unsuitable. Later, Brown, who had been out of employment for some time, and was a married man, asked for work, and he was given the job. Collyer would willingly have paid Brown's entrance fee to the Union had he known his circumstances. His Worship inflicted a penalty of 20s, with 20s witnesses' expenses. Collyer, he said, should have consulted the employment book of the Union again.
