LOGS ADRIFT AT SEA

NEAR EAST CAPE. Wellington, Last Night. The following telegram was received yesterday by the Marine Department from the Collector of Customs at Auckland:— "Master of steamer Surrey reports passing a large number of hardwood logs between Portland Island and East Cape." The Surrey left Wellington for Auckland at 5.30 a.m. on Sunday, and arrived at her destination at noon on Monday. It is surmised that the logs which she sighted on the run up have been washed down some river in the vicinity of the Bay of Plenty during the recent bad weather.
