"MADE IN GERMANY."
A PROTEST FROM AUSTRALIA. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Melbourne, February 21. A deputation of the Chamber of Manufacturers to the Postmaster-Gen-eral protested against the acceptance of a German tender for steel pipes In preference to Australian cast iron pipes. It was argued that if Australia granted the same labor conditions as Germany, local tenders would be very different, N anii if Germany continued building Dreadoughts, Australian money should not help her. Mr. Thomas, replying, said that a preference of 15 per cent, was added to the Customs duties in considering tenders. The imported article suited them better, and also meant a saving of £IOOO. Under the circumstances it seemed to him that only one course was open.
