' Owing to the exceptionally dry set* son, the water in the river was lowet to-day than at any time since the n> ception of the Kiver Trust. When tba river steamer service was established, a zero mark was fixed at Pipiriki, as d* noting the lowest depth at which it wm reasonable to expect a steamer to rea\sM Pipiriki. To-day the water is 42 inchea below that zero mark, yet, owing t* improvements made in the river, steam* ers are going to Tanmarunui, a total ot 144 miles. ;
