MISPLACED CONFIDENCE
ARISTOCRATIC-LOOKING VISITOR DISAPPEARS. Auckland, Wednesday. Urgent inquiries are being made by the Auckland detectives as to the whereabouts of a young man who recently arrived in Wellington, bringing excellent; credentials and styling himself the sou of a member of the British aristocracy. He had no difficulty, it is believed, in making the acquaintance of some of the leading notabilities ia New Zealand. A trip to Auckland came off at the expense of a member of the Ministry, and when the young man arrived here he seemed to suddenly run short of cash. This was soon forthcoming, and as the reputed Englishman of high birth was staying at one of the principal hotels in the city and appeared to be acquainted with numerous members of the English aristocracy, his acquiantance was not shunned. It is rumoured amongst those who became, acquainted with this young gentleman that he even approached the Prime Minister for financial assistance. Motor trips were one means employed in the dissipation of his borrowed wealth, and the passing of a cheque that was not met led the police to get on his tracks.
