WOMAN TO SUPPORT HUSBAND
AN L'NL'SL'AL CASE. Christchurch, February 7. It is infrequent that a wife is sued for Maintenance of her husband, but, such a case was heard here to-day, when Edith Ivy Taylor charged Annie McCready with failing to maintain William McCready, defendant's husband and complainant's brother. It was stated in evidence by complainant that the man in question was in the last stages of consumption, and was incapable of supporting himself. Ho was being supported by his mother, with whom lie was living, and she had spent all her savings and the money obtained from his life insurance policy, which he had transferred to her, in supporting him, and was now in debt. Defendant, who stated that she earned 25s a week as a seamstress, but was at present not working, said that she had been thrown out of their hou.se by her husband's people. She had contributed several sums of money for her husband's support, and was willing to continue paying 10s per week provided that the transfer of her husband's life policy, on which she had paid the premiums, was cancelled. The magistrate hold that in the face of complainant's evidence he could not cancel the transfer of the policy. He made an order that defendant should pay 10s per week towards her husband's support.
