ASSAULT ON !l WIFE. ; By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Tuesday. Matthew Cooper, on a charge of having assaulted his wife, was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment. Mr. Justics Chapman took into consideration the fact that prisoner had already served two months' detention, and that a recommendation to mercy was made by the jury. PALMERSTON SESSIONS. Falmerston N., Last Night. At the Supreme Court to-day, Mr. Juatice Cooper withdrew the case against Michael Bitossi, charged with having in his possession moulds for the construction of counterfeit coins. William and Laura Carroll were acquitted of the theft of £7. A decree nisi was granted in the case Margaret Ann Nidd and John Joseph Nidd, and the petitioner was granted custody of the child. THE CHRISTCHURCH SESSIONS. Christchurch, Last Night. At the Supreme Court Jas. Burt, found guilty of assault and robbery, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labor, and was declared an habitual criminal. AN ASSAULT CASE.

Wellington, Last Night. At the Supreme Court to-day, before Mr. Justice Chapman, Henry Joseph Clements, a young man, was charged on three counts: (1) Assault with intent to cause bodily harm; (2) assault that did cause bodily harm; and (3) assault on Vance Clifford Hickok" on January! 14. The case for the Crown was that: Hickok escorted home a woman living' apart from her husband, and when the; latter reached the back of the house she was met by the accused, who had previously kept company with her and paid her board. He made an offensive remark, receiving a slap on the face, returning the blow with a boot he was carrying. Hickok demanded an apology, which request was received with fflthjg language. Hickok tried to stop him by.'' putting his hand over his mouth, and was struck with a bottle of beer several times. The defence was that Hickok struck accused twice, and that the bottle of beer was thrown in self-defence. The jury found accused guilty of common assault under extreme provocation from. Hickok. Sentence was deferred till tomorrow.
