LAWRENCE-ROXBURGH LINE
CONSTRUCTION WORK TO BE RESUMED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Tuesday. ~ As a definite move in connection with the promised resumption of work on the Lawrence-Roxburgh railway (a portion of the Central Otago line) the Government is calling tenders for constructing a tunnel of about twenty chains, a length of approach cuttings and certain road d'evration work necessary at a point twenty-nine miles IProm the [junction with the main line. The tunnel is situated at Big Sill, and it was the fact that this expensive work would have to be next undertaken which led the Government early in 1809 to decide against going on with the line. Work, however, could not be suspended until matters had been completed to a point where the construction could bo utilised without danger of falling into disrepair. The consequence was that last year, despite the decision to cease work, £14,000 was spent on the section. Operations have since been completely suspended, but they will be resumed on the contract system when the tenders are dealt with early in March.
