GENERAL TELEGRAMS

ARTHUR'S PASS TUNNEL. By Telegraph—Prees Association. < Christchureh, Last Night. Work at the Otira end of the Arthur's Pass tunnel is at a standstill, owing to the refusal of Mr. Murdoch McLean to receive, as a member of a deputation from the workers, Mr. Tim Armstrong, secretary of the Tunnel Workers' branch of the West Coast General Laborers' Union. Negotiations have been broken off. The union has decided to hand over the dispute to the New Zealand Federation of Labor, and Mr. Scmple, the organiser thereof, arrives at Otira to-mor-row. The men's grievances aw similar to those investigated by Mr. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, about twenty moiitns ago, the principal being the absence of a definition of "wet places." The men held an open-air meeting to-night. The present feeling at Otira is that the struggle will be a keen one, but the unprepareiiness of the men for a lomrcontinued conflict is one point against it being a lengthy one.

A PALMKRS'PON BURGLARY. Palmerston North, Last Night. In connection with the robbery from the Manawatu Club, the police have arrested Howard Stanley Walters, who had been acting as relieving steward at the club. FROZEN EELS FOR GERMANY. Christclnirch, January 30. A company is being formed in Christchurch to export eels to Hamburg, Germany. It is stated that there are unlimited supplies of palatable eels in this Dominion, and that there is an unlimited market in Germany, and perhaps in other European countries. It is intended to establish depots at different places in New Zealand, the first being at Lake Ellesmere, and to send the fish to Europe in a frozen condition. Several prominent citizens in the city have interested themselves in the enterprise, which, it is believed, will be very successful.
