A SERIOUS CRIME
A FOXTON CASE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmcrston N., Last Night. Ernest A. Hamilton pleaded guilty al the Magistrate's Court, PalmeretoH to a charge of attempted rape, on a girl fourteen years old at Foxton on Thursday last, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
A correspondent of the Wanganui Chronicle supplies, particulars of the case. Three girls were walkng along the Beach road when a man rushed out, seized one of them, and carried her into the raupo alongside the road. The girl struggled to free herself, and when almost losing consciousness a trap drove by, and the occupants, noticing the raupo waving, jumped out and investigated. The man made off through the raupo, and tli« girl was taken to her home. Beyond her neck being scratched and bruised fortunately nothing more serious happened. A young man named Hamilton, aged 21 years, recently discharged from the Haupiri, was arrested and charged with the offence and remanded to Palmcrston. He was quickly recognised by the three children. The victim of the assault was only thirteen years of age. When she was attacked her assailant threatened to murder the other two girls, who rushed off towards the head settlement for assistance. The residents at the Heads immediately formed search parties, and assisted the police in scouring the raupo swamp for the man. While searching, they discovered a pocket-book Which is believed to belong to the arrested man.
