Lord Metlmen, speaking at a banquet, dwelt upon the advisability of the South African army being a free Imperial garrison, able to go anywhere when required. He was convinced South Africa was ready to belp the Motherland in cast of need, and remarked that the Cape Mounted Rifles was a nucleus which might be increased. He also eulogised the cadet corps.
