ANTI-MODERNISM
POPE'S ACTION CAUSES AN OUTBURST. By Cable—Press Association—CopyrightReceived 30, 11.45 p.m. Berlin, January 30. Prussia recently required exemption for the Professors of Catholic Theology in the Prussian universities from the anti-modernist oath, arguing that the Prussian officials' oath would deprive them of their independence as teachers. It was officially understood that the Vatican had yielded, but the Pope's letter to the Archbishop of Cologne, which has now been published, expresses the conviction that while professors not holding church beneficiaries are exempted, they, rather than bow before men who were inspired with hate against the Catholic faith, should be the first to take the anti-modernist oath, in order to show their independence. The publication of the letter has caused a great outburst in the Press. Even the clerical paper, Krueg Zeitung, accuses the Pope of internationally provoking a conflict with the Prussian Government.
