A KING COUNTRY TIPPLE
"HOP BEER AXD CRAYFISH." By Telegraph.—Press Association, Auckland, Saturday. Reuben Asher Marks, charged at the Magistrate's Court at Taumarunui with having sold intoxicating liquor, was fined £4O and £7 4s costs.
The prosecution alleged that a resident of Taumarunui returned there from Auckland on Christmas Eve, and instead of going home, remained in and about defendant's place for five days. On the 2Uth he was discovered making for Marks' premises laden with seven bottles of whisky, which were seized by the police. Next day the resident returned home, minus a considerable amount of money which he had paid to Marks and was under liability to pay more, mainly for "hop beer and crayfish." The place had been watched for three months, and a number of men who had entered sober were seen coming away intoxicated.
Defendant alleged that his guest drank 80 bottles of hop beer and two bottles of lime juice in 3'/ 3 days.
