RICHMOND RAILWAY DISASTER

Driver Allan was fined £3O for not sending his fireman to the signal-box when detained by the advanced starting signal; the fireman was fined £5; and the guard of the first train cautioned for not having tail lights burning. Signalman McDonald, of South Yavra, was dismissed from the service, but recommended for a less responsible position.
Driver Melville, of the second train, was dismissed from the service for not having obeyed the signals. His fireman was found not guilty on a similar charge.
On July IS a train from Elsternwick ran into \i Brighton train just as it was leavinji Richmond station. The Brighton .train was delayed by fog, and the Elstcrnwiek train was travelling at considerable speed. The driver stale:! that his was on the look-out for fog signals, but heard none. Ten persons were killed and a large number more or less seriously injured.
