The depression in the Lancashire cot- j ! ton trade has ended, and there is -diii'i- j ! culty in securing operatives necessary | for the amount of employment offering. Some experts believe that cotton stocks are insufficient to last until next crop is available, with a possibility of ridieulously inflated prices before September.
TRADES UNIONS IN GERMANY. Berlin, January 17. Trade unionists in 1910 increased 200,000, and now number 2,000,000. Members of the unions have trebled within ten years.
CONGO COLONISATION. Brussels, January 17. M. Renkin, Colonial Minister, speaking at a banquet, said that free trade must be introduced in the Congo, otherwise healthy colonisation would be impossible.
FATAL FIRE AT HONGKONG. Hongkong, January 17. Hongkong files report that in a fire there on January 2 four women and five children, whose escape was cut off by a burning staircase, were burned to death.
AUSTRIA AND GERMANY. Vienna, January 17. A conference at Aussig, under the auspices of the Reiehcnderg Chamber oi 'Commerce, passed a unanimous resolution, supported by representatives of the Ministers of Commerce and Agriculture, which emphasised Austria's rights to the free navigation of the Elbe, and urged the Government to decline to negotiate with Germany concerning the imposition of shipping dues on the Elbe, no matter whatever compensation were offered for the modification of the Elbe treaties.
