WHAT WAS IT?
A SIGNAL AT SEA. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Friday. The captain of the steamer Kaipara, which arrived at Wellington to-day, reported to the Marine Department that when crossing Palliser Bay this morning a sailing vessel was observed making for the coast and flying a. signal which the Kaipara was not near enough to read. The Marine Department sent the Government steamer Hinemoa to the scene to investigate, but owing to the southerly gale she was unable to get through the Heads, and waited at Worser Bay till the weather moderated. Wellington, Saturday. In consequence of a report that a barque appeared to be in distress in Palliser Bay yesterday afternoon, the Marine Department sent the Hinemoa to render assistance if necessary. The Government steamer made a thorough search, but failed to see any vessel in or near the Bay. Whatever vessel was seen in the Bay yesterday evidently managed to sail out into the Strait during the night.
