STRIKERS TAKE CHARGE
DEVELOPMENT OF PORTUGUESE RAILWAY TROUBLE. By Cable—Press Association—C ; right Received 15, 5.5 p.m. Lisbon, January 14. The railway companies offer the men increased wages amounting to £30,000 annually, a nine hours' day, and free passes to all employees and their families. Tliey explain that dividends are less than £20,000, and that for years the de-benbure-holdtrs were receiving only a portion of their interest. The strikers insist on their full demands being satisfied. They nre now in possession of the managerial executive offices, and have appropriated the books and documents. The Government refuses the assistance of the military to enable the company to regain possession, so long as the strikers continue orderly. THE RAILWAY STRIKE SETTLED. '- GAS WORKERS "OUT." Received lf>, 12.50 a.m. Lisbon, January 16. The railways strike iias terminated. The concessions include twenty days' ! leave on full pay. The gas workers have struck, but naval stokers relighted the furnaces at the gasworks, and the military dispersed the strikers, who were objecting. ■ —■
