UPPER CARRINGTON ROAD

IIILL'S CONTRACT. A deputation of half-a-dozen ratepayers of Upper Carrington road waited on ' the County Council yesterday re Hill's contract, and was headed bv Mr. 11. .1. Blanchctt, who explained that at a meeting of those interested the following resolutions were carried:—

"We, the ratepayers of Upper Carrington road, wish to bring under your notice the. fact that this contract, which you let some ten months ago, is making practically no progress, and we would respectfully urge the Council to push on the work; the season is rapidly passing, and if the work is not pushed on now, it means another winter for the settlers on a practically impassable road. If the present contractor is not prepared to make more progress, we ask you to rescind the contract and give it to a man who will do the work at once."

'•Re the ;E3()0 loan and ifil.'iO subsidy. —We respectfully urge the Council to call for tenders for this expenditure at once, so that the work may be completed before the winter." The chairman said that two months ago hj? had instructed the engineer to have the work proceeded with. Mr. Blanehett said the only work done for a long time was boulder-getting from the river by two men. The Council would realise that as the road was a mud one they wanted the work pushed on in the summer time; as bullocks were employed necessarily the work was somewhat slow and, on account of the wet weather, irregular. All they wanted was to have tile work pushed on. The deputation then withdrew. Cr. Carter said unless the work was pushed on more expeditiously than at present, the deputation had cause for complaint.

It was resolved that Messrs. Sladden and Palmer be instructed to prepare plans and specifications for the expenditure of £SOO on the Upper Carrington road, and that tenders for same be dealt with at next meeting. Also that the Public Works Department be communicated with to ascertain which portion of the. Carrington road the grant of £l3O was intended for.
