LINERS IN COLLISION
CURIOUS ACCIDENT IN NEW YORK HARBOR.
New York, November 17.
Thousands of people who were assembled on tile piers to wave a farewell to friends departing for Europe witnessed a collision in the Hudson between two great liners—the French Lorraine and the German I'rinz Friederich "Wilhehn.
Both vessels were timed to start, on opposite sides of the river, at the same hour. The passengers on liie decks were fluttering their handkerchiefs when the Lorraine's bow swept dangerously near the German liner, which was moving stern first out of the dock. A powerful ebb tide was flowing. A moment later the Lorraine's starboard bow struck the other liner a blow oil hrr stern. The shock of the collision was such that manv passengers were thrown on the deck 'and dishes ami plates in the saloons were tossed to the floor. hen the ships wire separated it was seen that both liners had torn holes some Sft square above the. water-line, and they returned to tile docks.
The Lorraine, after a four hours' delay, cfleeted temporary repairs and took on board the mails of the l'rinz Friederieh Wilhelm, ami started.
