The Select Committee's report of the State fcoal mine states that the area already proved contains five million tons. Until the development discloses a much greater quantity available the present conditions of working the mine for railways and other Government departments and selling slack coal only had better be continued. The committee recommends the immediate transfer of the management to the Railway Commissioners, and thorough equipment and development so as to permit during an emergency double or treble the normal output. This is important in the event of strikes. It would also act as a regulator of the price of the Newcastle coal. The report suggests a searching inquiry into the administration of the Mines Department, evidence having disclosed complete disregard of commercial methods and waste of public funds during the emergency period.
