Excavations at Pompeii have brought to light the petrified body of a woman who was overwhelmed by ashes just outside the city. New York, December 22. r Washington states that the Superior Court granted thirty-three divorces in three hours. The judge denounced the laxity of the divorce law, and said he would endeavour to secure an amendment. i A FROZEN CORPSE. Ottawa, December 22. A barrel containing the frozen remains of an aged man was opened at Montreal station, as it was addressed to the janitor of a college which closed years ago. There were no marks of violence. The barrel was shipped from Ontario City. The whole affair is a mystery. CHINESE AND OPIUM. Pekin, December 22. The Chinese Assembly has presented a memorial to the Throne in favour of the severest punishment short of death for opium smoking and rewards for information leading to arrests.
