A DESTRUCTIVE BLIZZARD. Received 18, 5.5 pan. New York, December 17. A blizzard was experienced on the Massachusetts Coast. Five schooners wrecked, and a barge foundered. Others broke adrift. The actual loss of life is not ascertainable. 1
STORM ON AMERICAN COAST. Received It), 12.15 a.m. New York, December 18. The New England coast is being swept by a storm. Two barges sunk and seven' people were (drowned. Several ships are ashore.
MISHAP TO THE WAIMATE. Received 19, 12.40 a.m. N Sydney, December 18. The steamer Waimate, which sailed for Auckland on Friday evening, returned yesterday, a steam-pipe having burst. Repairs were effected, and the steamer sailed to-day.
CANADIAN STRIKES. Ottawa, December 16. The Winnipeg street car system is' at a standstill owing to a strike. The offer of University students to act as conductors has been accepted. Canadian Pacific Railway engineers will striki- next week unless increased pay is granted. PORT OF LONDON. London, December 16. The port of London authority from January 1 will make a uniform charge of JCd net t register per ton, covering the use of the docks for 10 days, in linn of th( present charge of 18d for 28 days. The new rate applies to shipping from outside Europe.
DEATH BEFORE PRISON. New York, December 16. Ward, a desperado, robbed the State Bank at Paradise, Kansas, and secured £SOO. He,took flight to the hills, but a posse of farmers surrounded him, and he committed suicide.

The license duties paid by the brewing business of Barclay and Perkins, amounted to £30,215, necessitated the postponement of a dividend on preference shares, and the reconstruction of the company. It was stated at the meeting of shareholders that the additional direct taxation since 1896 represented a capital value of '£1,350,000.
