OLD LADY BURNED TO DEATH
A CHRISTCHURCH FATALITY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchureh, Last Night. A lire occurred to-night in a sixromed house in Matheson's road, Linwood, the property of J. F. Staples, of Akaroa, and occupied by Mrs. Staples, sen. The latter, who had been bedridden for several years, was burned to death. When the fire brigade arrived on the scene the front bedroom, in which was Mrs. Staples, was burning fiercely, and there was no hope of reselling the occupant. The only other person in the house was Miss Staples, who attempted to save her mother, and was severely burned about the aims. Mrs. Staples had been reading by the light of a lamp, which got upset and set fire to the bed-curtain, and spread to the bedding. Insurances are unavailable. The deceased was one of the very old colonists. IK 1
