A WIFE ASSAULTED. By Telegraph.—Presa Association. Wellington, Wednesday. Matthew Cooper, a laundryman, was to-day committed for trial on a charge of having assaulted his wife so as to cause her bodily harm. The woman has been in the hospital since the 3rd inst., suffering from injury to the abdomen, and is likely to be there another month, though now out of danger. Bail was allowed. EDISON TRAMWAYS FOR GlSßofcsE. Gisborne, Wednesday. Mr. Lysnar, Mayor of Gisborne, who returned from England to-day, whither he proceeded to float the municipal loan, received a public welcome this morning, being met on landing by a large crowd with a band, and escorted to the Victoria belfry. Here congratulatory speeches were made. Mr. Lysnar mentioned that he had brought back a contract signed by the Edison Storage Battery Company for municipal trams; also Edison's guarantee, and if the council approved, the installation would be gone on with immediately.
