AN IMPORTANT DECISION. By Cable.—Press Associativa.—Copyright. Sydney, December 14. The High Court affirmed by a majority that a statute of Queen Anne invalidating notes, bills, and mortgages given as a consideration for gambling is non-existent in this State. Two decisions of the Full Court hitherto have been contradictory, the latter being to the effect that the statute has not been repealed. This was appealed against.
MERCHANT SERVICE GUILD. Melbourne, December 14.
In the Arbitration Court the discussion of the Merchant Service Guild case has concluded. Clause 2 was altered to provide that after a master or officer had served three months on one vessel his service could be terminated only by a month's notice on either side unless lie was engaged specially for a season or emergency trips or the vessel was taken out of commission through a strike. Officers may at any time be discharged for misconduct. Mr. M'Donald said that if the companies were compelled to pay overtime in port it would cost an extra £IO,OOO a year. Justice Higgins-. One company, the Union Company, makes £75,000 a year, and if all the companies have to pay an extra £ 10,000 it is not a serious matter. It was arranged that - the agreement should remain in force for three years and be signed on December 3-1.
RECORD RAINFALL. Sydney, December 14. The recent storm resulted in a fall of 4% inches of rain, a record for December. A COACH MISSING. Brisbane, December 14. The coach from Charleville to Augathella, heavily laden with mails and passengers, has been missing since Saturday.
