MR DEMPSEY'S SILVER JUBILEE

THE SCHOOL SHIELD. At the regular monthly meeting of the New Plymouth school committe last, night, there were present: Messrs. F. P. Corkill (chairman), M. Rudd, J. Grant, G. H. McGahey, fi. N. Rcnaud, and H. F. Russell. The shield recently presented to the school by the ex-pupils was on the table, and the following memorandum was submitted: Presentation, on Bth December, of a shield, suitably inscribed, to commemorate the 25 years' service of Mr. H. Dempsey as headmaster oi the school, the shield being a gift from the old boy and girl pupils of the school during Mr. Dempsey's headmastership, with a. request that it be hung in a conspicuous place in the school building. Messrs. Percy White, Phil Hopkins, and A. L. Hammond presented the shield at the school in the presence of the teachers and scholars of the higher standards. The Rev. S. S. The donors reported that there was a small surplus of cash, which they suggested might be expended in providing a glass case to cover the shield. The committee passed a resolution that the memorandum be received and recorded on the minutes, and that steps be taken to carry out the wishes of the donors.

The shield is very handsomely carved in oak. and under the superscription "XXV Amios" is inscribed on a silver plate: "This shield was presented by ex-pupils and teachers of this school to commemorate the 25th amiiversary of the appointment of }Tr. IT. Bempsey as headmaster. Centra] School; New Plymonth. ]MO. J ' The carving is the work of Mr. 0. Moverlcy, of New Plymouth.
