GENERAL TELEGRAMS
A NEW STEAMER.
By Telegraph. —Press Association. Wellington, Monday.
The New Zealand Company's latest steamer, the Rotorua, 11,500 tons, arrived from Plymouth yesterday afternoon. The maiden voyage, which occupied 42 days 20 hours, averaged a little over 13 knots, but from Hobart she did 14. Between Las Palmas, which was left on November 4, and Capetown, which was reached on November 18, strong south-easterly trades with rough head winds were encountered. There was fine weather for the remainder of the voyage. Captain Satcliffe, who brought out the Rotorua, has made 64 voyages between New Zealand and England. Of 429 third-class passengers 70 came out under the assisted system. Amongst the number were 31 domestics. A large number of miners, mechanics, and carpenters arrived at their own expense.
