In the Assembly the Treasurer sprang a surprise in the House by introducing an amendment which reduced) the land tax to a halfpenny and provided an allround exemption of £250. He stated that the Government wanted only sufficient revenue to keep the ledger straight. The reduction means £50,000 less revenue. The reduction and exemptions from £SOO were carried. The debate on the rate was still going on ivhen the House rose. The Legislative Council is, considering the Assembly's proposal for a free conference to consider the points in dispute in the Electoral Bill. HIGH COURT DOOMED. ■Sydney, December 8. Mr. Cook, ex-Minister of Defence, addressing a meeting at North Sydney, said that when the referendum proposals become law, unification would have arrived. The proposals were intended to get rid of the High Court, which had in most cases upheld State appeals against the Commonwealth. The Minister of Mines has decided not to accept Mr. "Warner's offer of coal area. New regulations tabled provide free education in high schools. ' District scholarships are to be established. The Government intends holding an inquiry into the Killing,worth explosion. THE FEDERAL REFERENDUM. Sydney, December 9. In the Assembly, during the financial debate, Oppositionists attackedi the Federal Government's referenda proposals. Mr. Waddell, ex-Treasurer, described the proposals as infamous. The Federal Government had bunched, four proposals together, because the Government knew one 'or more were rotten and would not stand on their merits. Mr. Wade spoke for two hours, chiefly upholding State rights. The Minister of Public Works described Mr. Wade's statement as a rhapsody of nonsense, but expressed no opinion on the referenda. 'Mr. McGowen, however, telegraphed to Mr. Hughes, asking for information on : the matter, as the Government was pressed on all sides for a pronouncement.
