THE PREMIER AND HIS PARTY

PLEASING EXPRESSION AT PALMERSTON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston North, Last Night. While Sir Joseph Ward was at the railway station to-day, during the stay of the Auckland r express, a large delegation of the local Liberal League waited upon him with an address, which congratulated him upon the successful conclusion of an arduous session { and expressed! keen sympathy with him in tbe gross personal attacks made on him personally and on the country's credit in London. The delegation expressed full confidence in him as leader of-the party and Prime Minister of the Dominion, and congratulated him on clearing the political atmosphere by ihis speech in the House.

Sir Joseph Ward: replied that he had had to suffer personal attacks for a long time past, but would continue to. do what he considered his duty to the country, in spite of these, or those who made them. They were un-British tactics, such as he had personally never resorted to, and never would. He dwelt on the great importance of the issues to come before the Imperial Conference, and thanked the delegation, for whom Mr. J. M. Johnson (as chairman of the League) was spokesman, for their expressions of confidence. Three cheers for Sir Joseph Ward, and three for Lady Ward concluded the proceedings.
