THUNDERSTORM AT DUNEDIN

Shortly after 2 o'clock tihis afternoon a , heavy thunderstorm burst over the city. i\ It came suddenly from the south-west, -"« after an intensely hot morning, and thetp.fJx was a (torrential downpour for twenty minutes, followed by two or three hours ■ of lighter rain, which should do a vast amount of good to the parched country. At Waipori, where the city hydro-electric power station is situated, there was 4 something in the nature of a 'waterspout, which did considerable damage to roads, etc. Persistent lightning interfered seriously with the electric system, and the , supply of current to the city was interrupted on five different occasions,, owing to insulators on the transmission line being smashed. The longest interruptions were an hour, and an x hour and a half. The tramway system was frequently , brought to a standstill until repairs were ! effected -each time, and manufacturing v firms using electrical energy were also seriously interrupted. - )
