ALLEGED EVASION OF DUTY. By Telegraph.—Press Association." j Wellington, Last Night. 5 A visit paid by Customs officials to a building used by the Wellington Steam '■ | Ferry Company at Eastbourne on Mon- . day morning last, resulted in the seizure ;^ of a quantity of paint. In consequence '■, of the seizure, informations have been \ sworn by C. S. Nixon, Collector of Cus- '\ toms, and laid against Edward Goodwin „j Fortescue Zohrab, charging the latter: (!) That he was knowingly concerned in -\ fraudulent evasion of Customs dutiee "j during March last, namely, on certain ; paints, about 3y 2 cwt. in quantity; (2) .} that between the 3rd and Bth March last I he was concerned in unshipping from the -5 steamer Neptune goods liable to duty, ■, % the duties for which had not been paid 'j or secured, namely, a quantity of paint. ;>• In each case the informant sues for a ji penalty of £IOO. The defendant is '}; called upon to appear'at the Magistrate's \g Court on Friday. The tramp steamer J Neptune called at Wellington for bunker '•: coal on March 3 last, while on a voyage j from Port Kemibla to Falmouth with ,'| grain. She remained at anchor in the -,| stream off Kaiwarra till the morning of the Bth, and then proceeded to England.' «$ It is alleged that during her stay in port ;; the paint mentioned was transferred from '* the steamer to the pilot, and then con- 1 veyed to Eastbourne. |
