"THE PACIFIC SLOPE."
A BANKRUPT MISSING. By Tslttgraph.—Press Association, Dunedin, Last Night. A meeting of creditors in the estate of Wm. Miller, a moneylender, who disappeared last October, and who was subsequently declared bankrupt, was 'held to-day, and was attended by about 25 creditors. The statement in regard to the bankrupt estate showed t/'.e assets to be approximately £1282 9s, and liabilities £4207 lis. The amount in the Assignee's 'hands was £165 18s Id. The Assignee leported that the task of trying to unravel Miller's business transactions was most difficult. There were several properties carrying first, second and third mortgages. The principal assets consisted of the equity of redemption on mortgages. Miller had been seen on a steamer sailing north from Lyctelton on October 5, but not since. ' The bankrupt had collected all the money he possibly could. He had been at it day and night. If he asked a man to pay a debt, and the man replied that he had only ten shillings on him, Miller would say, "Well, give me nine shillings." That was the -way he had been conducting his business. After discussion it was decided to spend a sum not exceeding £OO in enquiry as to the bankrupt's whereabouts. In referring to the estate, the Assignee said there were twenty-seven houses, with rents ranging from 15s or lCs a week down to 2s a week.
