WEST COAST COAL
NO MORE STATE MINES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Monday. A deputation representing the Brunncr and Greymouth districts interviewed the Premier and Minister of Mines on Saturday to urge the purchase of the Wallsend coal mine, Brunnerton, and suggested as an alternative to State ownership that the Government should purchase the freehold of the land on which the shaft stands and lease the rights to local people. It was known that the Brunner mine was closing down, and it was pathetic to see a once thriving borough facing its own extinction. The Premier expressed sympathy with the borough, but said it was impossible for the Government to undertake another mine on the coast. It was considering the question of purchasing the private interests. The Minister of Mines expressed himself similarly, adding that if twenty million tons of coal were in sight the Government would not start another mine on the coast.
