THE NAVAL BASE.
A PREMATURE ANNOUNCEMENT. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. ' Melbourne, November 28. The Federal Government recently cabled to the Imperial Government in reference to the statement that the naval base was to be removed to Auckland. The following reply has been received from the Secretary for the Colonies: "The statements presumably refer to the fact that when the Australian fleet unit is complete, in 1912, the Government of the Commonwealth will take over the dock at Sydney, and be responsible for the work in connection with the unit. While some of the smaller vessels of the China unit have New Zealand waters for their headquarters, as far as is known, Auckland has not been specially mentioned as a base for the vessels which will be kept in New Zealand waters."
