THE NEW COMMANDANT
STUDYING COLONIAL CONDITIONS. By Cable—Press Received 27, 6.40 p.m. Brisbane, November 26. Among the Makura's passengers is Major-General Godley, the new Commandant of the New Zealand Defence Forces. Interviewed, he said he broke the journey from London to enable him to visit Canada and America. He had inspected the military college at Kingston (Canada), and the West Point College (United States), where he met various prominent military officers and others interested in defence matters. He had been much impressed with the manner in which those institutions were maintained. He will meet Major-General Kirkpatriek, who will take him over the site of the proposed Australian Military Training College. He also hopes to meet General Hood and other prominent military men in the south, as, under a system of reciprocity, he wishes to meet as many officers as possible, and learn their view's on defence matters. Major-General Godley is keenly desirous of gleaning anything that will further his knowledge of these parts.
He was driven around the city by Colonel Lyster, the Queensland Commandant, on Saturday, and resumed his voyage on Sunday.
