THE PROPOSED STREET LOAN
ADDITIONAL WORKS. At lust night's mooting of the Borough Council, his Worship the Mayor referred to his loan proposals, which had licen under further consideration, lie said the Council considered at last meeting that the proposals were not romprchensivo enough, and that some, absolutely necessary works had not been dealt with. Me now proposed to do metalling 'as follows: —llobson-strcet (Courtenay-Lemon) £300; Jolm-street, £100; Aubrey-street, £150; Gnne-street, £150; Morley-street, filling and culvert, £1000; total, £I7OO, which, with the cost of the proposals mentioned previously (£2910), made £4OIO. In the course of his enquiries on the matter he learned that the totijl charges for water for sanitary usages connected with the sewers amounted to £OS(i 5s for the current year. This was equal to a return of (i per cent, on the cost of the works, which, he considered, was splendid business for the Council. The work which lie now proposed should also be done in the west ward would cost £1052, but that amount did not include the filling work that was urgently needed near the stream ill Morley-street, and was subject to no objection being raised to the work of raising the level of the street there by about nine feetl These were as follows:—Sewers; Weymouth to King streets (plus cost of easements required), £72; Aubrey-street (Morley-street to Weymouth-street), £112; Weymouth-street, £10; Morleystreet (Young-street to Aubrey-street, not including filling and culvert necessary at the Mangotuku stream, £52; Morleystreet (Aubrey-street to Vivian-street), £100; Young-street (Morley-street to Cutfield-road, half-distance),£44; Youngstreet (Morley-street to Alt. Edgecumbestreet), £64; St. Aubyn-street (Wey-mouth-street' to Morley-street), £112; St. Aubyn-street (Morley-street to Cut-field-road to Hine-street), £120; Devonstreet (Morley-street to Cutfield-road), £80; Powderham-street (Morley-street to Cutfield-road), £4O; Powderhamstreet (Morley-street to Mt. Edgecumbestrect), £G4; Standish-street (Dawsonstreet to Wallace Place), £120; Walterlane, £SO; total, £1052. The above did not include the cost of sewers, which were necessary in the east ward when the formation of Leaoh-street would allow of the extensions in this area to be connected to the present system. These were as follows: Courtenay-street, £169; Leach, £288; Lemon, £140; Gilbert, £192; Pendarves, £344; Cameron, £200; Cover, £240; Eliot, £92; Buller, £340; Octavius Place, £72; Moles worth, £170; Hobson, £4O; Gill, £4O; total, £2333. His Worship referred in detail to these works and considered the ratepayers would appreciate them. Some of the streets were thickly settled and good revenue would be derived from them.
Cr. Watkins said it was a splendid idea, especially if the Council metalled the streets, as a great deal of expense had been incurred in the past in tearing up the streets for sewerage works and having to lay them down again. His Worship: It would save a good deal of expense if the work is done before the installation of tramways. Cr. Dockrill threw out a warning as to the proceedings to be followed. The Council should get the people's vote before any contracts were let.
Cr. Bellringer said .he believed there would be great difficulty in getting the public to agree to £IOOO for Morleystreet.
The question of channelling was raised by Cr. Bellringer, and Cr. West suggested raising a £IO,OOO loan. They would then have £IOOO for channelling and another £IOOO for other works.
Members agreed generally with the proposals, but urged that more time should be given them in which to study the various items. Eventually his Worship agreed to supply councillors with a list of the proposed works and discuss same at a special meeting on Monday night.
