WAITARA NEWS
(From Our Own Correspondent.) . The supply of water available at the fire on Sunday morning should prove conclusively enough that it is quite adequate. The public appreciated it to the fullest, and expressed in no unmeasured terms the great benefit in case of a fire. Had it not been for the fact that an ample supply of water was available, it is difficult to say how much of the block would have been saved. Joll's building, on the opposite side of the road, was scorched, and had this caught fire it is difficult to say where it would have ended, for with the breeze carrying across to Lawrence's building, there was a very big chance of that catching, which would have meant the destruction of a very large portion of the block. The excellent work put in by the newly-formed Brigade was more like that of an old-established bod 3', and they deserve the town's best thanks for their services. It is pleasing to know that Mr. Snell will lose 110 time in re-erecting the building, and in the meantime Mr. Rennie has taken the premises recently occupied temporarily by Mr. Beckbessinger. The two first men to get out the hose and reel, Messrs R. Gilmore and S. Jones, deserve great credit for the expeditious way in which they arrived on the scene.
There can surely lie no opponents to the poll to-morrow after having seen the great benefit of a good water supply. Captain Ford considers the pressure equal to that of New Plymouth, and when a complete plant is established the fear of a fire spreading is small. The reservoir at the headworks kept up the tsupply splendidly, only pulling down less than six inches, and more than half an hour before the Brigade stopped the tank was gaining again. _ The Clifton R-owing Club are just putting in a shower-bath, which no doubt will be appreciated by members if we have a few days like yesterday. Thursday is the day of the Horticultural Society's show, and, judging by the interest displayed, it should be a successful gathering. Entries close to-night at 8 o'clock.
When the safe at Mr. Rennie's was opened yesterday, the fact was disclosed that the papers were not even scorched. This should be a good advertisement for the makers.
